Loose, Sagging Skin

Youthful skin is firm, full and taut. As we age, the components of the skin that maintain elasticity, collagen and elastin, begin to break down resulting in a loosening of the skin. Although we may notice this change first in the face, the process also affects other parts of the body.

Loose skin on neck & face

The changes that occur as a direct result of the aging process and repeated sun exposure might first be noticed as fine lines, expression lines, brow lines, or mild crow’s feet. As time goes on, other issues may appear as a result of an increase in the skin becoming less elastic. Each individual may experience a varying degree of the following conditions.

  • Downward trending of the skin of the forehead, face and neck
  • Deeper lines and wrinkles
  • Jowls
  • Hollowness in areas of the face
  • Hooding of the upper eyelid
  • Fine lines and bags underneath the eye
  • Corners of the mouth turning downward
  • Uneven jaw line
  • A persistent tired look
  • Eyes that appears less open

In the past, surgical procedures were the only method of reversing the effects of loss of elasticity resulting in loosening skin. With today's remarkable advancements in aesthetic technologies, it is possible to restore a full, youthful appearance with lower cost, non-surgical alternatives.

A significant advance in the field of non-invasive correction of aging skin, Ultherapy® utilizes ultrasound technology to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin which occurs as a result of time and gravity. Through the stimulation of new collagen production, the foundation of the skin is reinforced, resulting in a more youthful, healthy appearance. This treatment is specific to the brow, face and neck as it delivers sound waves deep into the tissue without any damage to the surface of the skin. Ultherapy® is FDA approved for this precise action, and most recently was also cleared for treatment of loose and sagging skin in the decollete.

Using radio frequency technology, Thermage™ is another non-invasive treatment used specifically to tighten the skin, and requires no downtime. Radio frequency technology used in this treatment acts to heat and shrink collagen, producing tightening. Post treatment, new collagen is formed, reinforcing the structure of the face or body. This procedure can be performed specifically for the eyes, or can be applied to either targeted areas of the face or to the entire face in one treatment session.

Additional therapies may be added to Ultherapy® and Thermage™ to correct any deep lines or hollowness that may persist. Advanced Injectable Filler Products, such as Restylane™, Juvéderm™, Voluma™ or Radiesse™ can be used to complete the look of youthful fullness!

As always, it is most important to use a sunblock of SPF30 every day of the year. The status of your skin can be an important factor in achieving the best results from aesthetic treatments. Strong, effective and appropriate products to use in your daily skin care regimen can bring the condition of your skin to its ultimate condition. Please see Medical Skin Care Products for additional information on this topic.

The Body

The same forces that produce loose, sagging skin of the face are also at work in the aging process in other areas of the body.

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Legs
  • Thighs

In the same versatile treatment used to tighten tissue of the face, Thermage™ radiofrequency technology has the same effect on larger parts of the body as well. The collagen is heated and subsequently shrinks, causing a tightening. Over a period of months, new collagen is formed, reinforcing the structure of the skin. This can be the answer for those looking to help firm sagging skin and reduce unwanted bulges that dieting and exercise alone cannot seem to change.
